CBT interventions focus on teaching skills so that clients learn to identify and alter dysfunctional thinking patterns that fuel anxiety, anger and depression and sustain unhealthy behaviors. New behaviors are taught to replace old, ineffective actions so that measurable change occurs in a relatively brief period of time.

About Joyce Nay LCSW-C

Joyce L. NayAs a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I came to this work out of a labor of love and commitment to helping my clients achieve their desired dreams and to cope effectively with life’s many challenges. Having children early and experiencing the pains of divorce, I met the love of my life in 1972, and personally became aware of the need for couples counseling. I find that working with couples in helping them strengthen their marriages and to open the lines of communication to be most essential and rewarding. Of particular importance today, is the impact blended marriages bring to the relationship, and in our work together, couples are armed with the benefits of communications training and boundary setting tools to enhance their interactive skills and to achieve positive outcomes.

I also enjoy working with individuals who find themselves stressed over daily life occurrences which may be due, in part, to a physiologic or psychological issue and together we problem solve and facilitate the essential outcomes desired. In addition, I have worked with older adults and their families in assisted living and skilled nursing facilities and have gleaned many essential resources and skills in effecting desired outcomes for both older adults and their families while using a collaborative approach that emphasizes individual dignity and self determination as crucial components of these interactions.

In volunteering with the homeless since 1983, I have learned the value social work brings to individuals. Today, I am able to give back one day a week to our Annapolis Light House Shelter guests and conduct individual and group psychotherapy to help less fortunate individuals along their life’s journey. Sitting on the Annapolis Area Ministries Board for five-years brought home the need for more shelter as we turn away 700+ children and families annually, and as of September 30, 2010, we will have tripled availability for shelter in our newly constructed shelter which will also host a day program and resource center for the chronically homeless.
